Vitamin D Superpower for All
Vitamin D is present in foods like liver, butter, fatty fish, and egg yolks. Its benefits for immunity are significant, yet approximately 35% of Americans suffer from Vitamin D deficiencies. So, what symptoms should you watch for?
Vitamin D deficiencies can lead to:
- Bone and muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Mood changes
- Disruption in hormone regulation
- Potential influence on insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health
- Increased susceptibility to illness
- Hair loss
- Loss of appetite
- Regulation of low-grade inflammation
This deficiency can occur due to inadequate sunlight exposure, insufficient dietary intake of Vitamin D, or poor absorption of the vitamin due to conditions such as Celiac Disease, Crohn's disease, or following bariatric surgery. Additionally, certain medications—including GLP-1, Metformin, steroids, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and seizure-preventing drugs—can impair absorption and lead to deficiencies.
From a functional perspective, I recommend maintaining Vitamin D levels between 50 and 80 ng/mL. There are three forms of Vitamin D, but the most important for supplementation is Vitamin D3. This form is often combined with K2 for synergistic support of bone and cardiovascular health. Relying solely on food sources is typically insufficient to achieve optimal levels, so testing is advisable to determine the need for supplementation. Supplements are available in various forms, including capsules, softgels, liquids, and sprays, with oil-based delivery often providing the best absorption.
Contraindications for Vitamin D supplementation include:
- Hypercalcemia (elevated calcium levels)
- Sarcoidosis and other granulomatous diseases
- Primary hyperparathyroidism
- Certain lymphomas
- Previous history of Vitamin D toxicity
- Poor kidney function or a history of kidney stones
Caution is advised for individuals with conditions that impair fat absorption.
Remember, sunlight is a primary source of Vitamin D, so try to get 15 to 30 minutes of midday sun exposure on your face, legs, and arms to help maintain adequate levels.
